I love where I live. The United States is widely culturally diverse that we get a flavor of different cultures and access to amazing foods. I have worked in an Emergency Room in an inner city and I have gotten the ability to care for patients from many cultures. I have also worked in homecare which has also given me experience with diversity. I love that we are all different. I recently visited Disney World and Epcot is one of my favorite parks. What park is your fav? I love Epcot because for a moment I get to be transported to Moroco, Japan, Canada, Italy, and Mexico. I love to see the different cultures art, cuisine and customs. Now how does this apply to nusing? In the US we are the melting pot, which means as a nurse we will encounter a vast array of cultures and religions. Not only must we be culturally aware and sensitive, but we must learn how to come along side our patients in this area. Our patients are not just physical, but a whole person which includes their mental, spiritual and cultural being along with their physical. What areas of your patients culture mat affect your nursing care? Maybe diet, I once precepted students in a facility that had an asian wing, these patients were given foods that were traditional to their cultural. Different religions may have different diet restrictions. Do you know what they are? I have found to care for our patient in the best holistic way we need to be aware of these differences and ensure our patients needs are being met. Different cultures and religions may have rituals or ceremonies for birth, sick and death. Ensuring and assisting the patient and family in theses areas is something they will never forget. These are just a few ways culture may intersect with nursing, there are many more areas for you to explore. I challenge you to advocate for you patients and ask them how you can assist them in maintaining their values and culture as you provide health care.
